Due to the wide availability of jobs, hospitality is an important career. It is both vast and demanding and hugely varied; whether you choose to work in hotels, catering, beverages, cruises, events, or nightlife, there are hundreds of roles on offer. In order to be successful, there are a core set of skills that you will need to possess.

Therefore, to help you determine whether you have what it takes to make your way in this field, we’ve compiled a list of the key attributes required.

  1. High level of customer service skills: A career in hospitality means working in a customer-facing environment. The one thing that can make or break you in hospitality is your ability to meet customer expectations. Whether you are simply serving drinks or running an entire hotel, it’s your job to ensure that your customers are having a great time and that they have nothing to worry about. Remember always: negative feedback can spread quickly.
  2. Good communication skills and work ethics: Strong communication skills are highly valued in every industry, but especially so in hospitality and tourism Each day, you will be dealing with people from a variety of backgrounds, ages, nationalities, and temperaments, so it is important that you can communicate in a way that is both clear and understandable, as well as representative of your employer’s brand.
  3. Passion to travel & other culture awareness:If you plan on progressing in hospitality, you are going to encounter a lot of different people from a lot of different places. In order to succeed, you must be sensitive and understanding of different cultures, religions, races, nationalities – and everything in between.
  4. You have an eye on detail: According to author and media expert “Michael Levine- the biggest problems in any business arise from ignoring the smallest of detail.” It’s not as simple as it sounds; paying attention to details is a skill that needs to be acquired and just like other skills, it requires conscientious practice.
  5. You have the ability to multitask and work well under pressure: Being able to fulfill multiple roles in a hospitality or tourism enterprise is a way for employees to render themselves indispensable to their employers. It’s important to be able to juggle different tasks simultaneously while completing each task assigned. Thus, the ability to multitask may be one of the most important skills in this industry. One way for students to get a head start in developing their ability to multitask is to work on their studies.
  6. You have the teamwork spirit: Team spirit is very important in any area of life. It creates the unity of a group and makes everyone want to excel for the well-being of the group as well as improving work performance. Good team spirit makes it possible to go beyond clashes of personality in order to work towards and achieve the common goal of the team.
  7. You know how to lead:While a manager attempts to get employees to do their jobs leaders take employees along for the ride, sharing their vision and inspiring everyone to reach their fullest potential. It’s very important for any employee to know how to motivate people, and the team he is working with. Motivation and good leadership will ensure trust and success.
  8. Networking:In the hotel management industry, networking is used by professionals to widen their circles of acquaintances, find out about job opportunities, and increase their awareness of news and trends in their fields Business owners may network to develop relationships with people and companies they may do business with in the future. The best networking opportunities may occur at trade shows, seminars, and conferences, which are designed to attract a large crowd of like-minded individuals.
  9. Have the target to get promoted so fast and young: Career planning is not complete without taking into account one of the most critical element, and that is “promotions”. You need to understand that getting a promotion is a consequence of following a specific set of actions. There is no such automatic-affair with promotions as being open to others, passionate, positive self-image, being patient, and working in a high–growth industry.
